Serving Troy, MI

At Suburban Subaru, our customers are often drawn to the Outback SUV when they need a dependable, well-equipped vehicle designed to perform well in various situations. With varying capabilities and features across the full trim lineup and a few updates on display in the 2022 version, you need to know what to expect from this model before you stop by for a test drive. Specifically, how do the 2021 Outback and the 2022 Outback compare?

Performance

The Subaru Outback’s sixth generation debuted in 2020, so the 2021 and the 2022 versions have modern engineering, style, and features. However, one of the more significant differences that you may notice between the 2021 and 2022 Outback SUVs is the introduction of the Wilderness edition for the most recent model year. The Wilderness receives the same powertrain as you will find on the XT trim, and this is a 260-horsepower, turbo four-cylinder, 2.4-liter engine. The other trim levels for 2020 and 2021 have a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder, 182-horsepower engine.

Appearance

The only design difference between the 2021 and 2022 Outback versions is found on the Wilderness trim level. The Wilderness has 9.5 inches of ground clearance, and this is higher than the ground clearance on other trim levels. Across both model years, the Outback has an athletic, capable appearance with thick molding, raised roof rails, an H-shaped element in the LED headlights, and other exterior accents.

Features

The primary variations in the Outback’s features are found between the trim levels rather than between the model years. Both model years come with EyeSight safety tech, an 11.6-inch display screen in the center stack, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a push-button starter, and more. The Wilderness trim level for 2022 also has water-repellant StarTex upholstery, all-weather floor mats, and copper accent stitching.
