2019 Subaru Impreza vs 2019 Subaru Legacy

Serving Troy, MI

The Impreza and the Legacy are two of the oldest nameplates produced by Japanese automaker Subaru. They also comprise the company’s smallest and most affordable ones; the Impreza is a compact car and the Legacy is a larger, midsized one. The 2019 model year finds the Impreza in the middle of its fifth production cycle and the Legacy close to the end of its sixth. Little to nothing has been changed on either vehicle for this model year, as both of them continue to offer features that are still unique in their respective classes.

Both the 2019 Subaru Impreza and the 2019 Subaru Legacy have a standard all-wheel drive, which is still rare in the compact and midsize car sectors. As a result, they are better than most in handling slippery surfaces. They differ, however, in powertrain components. At the base level, the smaller Impreza uses a 2.0-liter flat-four-cylinder (H4) engine, which provides 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque and is hitched to a 5-speed manual transmission. On the larger Legacy, you can choose between two larger flat engines: a 2.5-liter H4 with 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque and a 3.6-liter H6 that produces 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. In addition, the transmission accompanying each engine is a continuously variable transmission, which provides a smoother ride due to the lack of gear shifting. With its base-level powertrain configuration, the Legacy provides a peak fuel economy of 28/38 mpg. On the Impreza, you can peak at 25/34 mpg provided that you go with the smaller, 2.5-liter H4.

The 2019 Subaru Impreza is available as a four-door sedan and a five-door hatchback, while the 2019 Subaru Legacy is available in just the former bodystyle. Both adopt a sleek yet robust look. For its exterior features, the 2019 Impreza starts with multi-reflector halogen headlights, folding side mirrors, and 16-inch steel wheels. Although the base-level Legacy also has folding side mirrors, it uses projector beams rather than multi-reflectors for its halogen headlights, and it gets larger, 17-inch steel wheels.

Since the 2019 Subaru Impreza is available in sedan and hatchback bodystyles, it offers varying amounts of interior space. The hatchback offers up to 100.9 cubic feet of passenger volume and 20.8 cubic feet of standard cargo space. On the sedan, it’s 99.8 cubic feet and 12.3 cubic feet, respectively. Both variants offer less interior space than the 2019 Subaru Legacy, which has a peak passenger volume of 104.6 cubic feet and a standard cargo volume of 15 cubic feet. For comfort and convenience, both vehicles provide features such as electronic cruise control, Bluetooth® wireless technology for hands-free phone calls and audio streaming, Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ for smartphone integration, STARLINK™ infotainment integration, four-speaker audio, AM/FM radio, a USB port and an audio jack for hooking up portable media devices, and a 6.5-inch LCD touchscreen. Subaru, however, adds a single-disc CD player and a trial subscription to SiriusXM® satellite radio. For safety, both the Impreza and Legacy start with features such as dual front impact airbags, dual front seat-installed side-impact airbags, a pair of roof-mounted side curtain airbags, rear vision camera, daytime running lights, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, and brake override, hill start assist, vehicle dynamics control, traction control, and a theft-deterrent system. On the Impreza, Subaru adds a driver’s knee airbag. On the Legacy, longer-lasting and brighter LEDs replace the halogen bulbs on the daytime running lights, and active torque vectoring and the EyeSight® driver-assist technology suite (new for 2019) are added
