Take a Drive in the New Subaru Solterra: Subaru's First Electric Vehicle
Many manufacturers these days have produced one EV or more. But Subaru is one of a few brands that haven't - today, that changes. For the first time, Subaru has an all-electric vehicle in its lineup, and it's called the Solterra. This electric SUV comes from a collaboration with Toyota and builds upon the related bZ4X model. The Solterra will be similar in size to the Forester and have several familiar Subaru features like light off-road capabilities and various tech. Design
The exterior of the Subaru Solterra is similar to many EV models. There are crisp lines, LED headlights, and no grille. But step inside the cabin, and drivers will find features like a high-mounted digital gauge cluster, a large touchscreen, and an elevated center console.
The steep windshield, large side glass, and panoramic sunroof give the cabin an airy feel. While the mix of attractive textures contributes to the overall aesthetic. The Solterra has 30 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded flat, along with various storage options, including a bin under the center console.
Trims
The Subaru Solterra is an all-electric SUV offered in three trim levels:
- Premium
- Limited
- Touring
Performance
As an all-electric vehicle, the Subaru Solterra is powered by a 72.8-kWh battery pack and two electric motors to produce 215 horsepower and 249 lb.-ft of torque. This powertrain also comes standard with all-wheel drive. The power the Solterra produces can be deployed in multiple ways depending on the drive mode selected, of which there are four: Eco, Normal, Power, and X-mode. These drive modes are intended to help the Solterra in slippery conditions or driving on uneven terrain by independently modulating the power to each wheel.
Charging & Range
With its 72.8-kWh battery pack, Subaru says the new Solterra will have a range of 228 miles when riding on 18-inch wheels. But with 20-inch wheels, the range dips to 222 miles. Subaru also says that the model can be fully recharged in nine hours when the Solterra is plugged into a Level 2 charging station. When hooked to a 100-kW DC fast charger, the vehicle can reach an 80-percent charge in about 56 minutes.
Technology
When inside the cabin, drivers will find a 12.3-inch touchscreen is a standard fixture in n the center of the dash. Every model also features Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a wireless phone charger. Additional features include built-in navigation and upgraded stereo by Harman/Kardon, but this costs extra. Also, with the inclusion of a smartphone app, drivers can remotely control the HVAC system for pre-conditioning the cabin or to lock and unlock the doors.
Safety
The Solterra is a first for Subaru, not just as an EV but in the safety features this model offers. Subaru has installed a 360-degree camera system for the first time as a safety feature. Additionally, Subaru has also installed standard driver-assistance technology, including:
